What does a whole chicken cost?A whole chicken typically costs between $24 - $36 because we sell our chickens for $6/lb and their weight ranges from 4 - 6 lb.

How many pounds is a whole chicken? How many servings is that?A whole chicken typically weighs ~5 lb. In our two person household, we get 4-5 servings from one roast chicken. We also make soup from the bones and scraps, so one chicken can easily provide multiple meals for a family.

Does pasture raised chicken taste different?Pasture raised chicken is so incredibly moist... Just wait until you make gravy from one of our chickens! The meat is also denser/firmer than commercial because the chickens exercise more and have stronger muscles. When I eat grocery store chicken, I find the breast meat to be dry and almost mushy in texture, so I usually stick to thighs. Our chicken allowed me to enjoy white meat again; it's so juicy and delicious!

Do I need to prepare my chicken? Our whole chickens are ready to cook straight from the bag, just like your typical Thanksgiving turkey. We prepare your chicken by removing the neck, feet, feathers, and innards. If you are interested in cooking up some chicken feet, livers, hearts, or necks, you can purchase these separately.

How do you cook a whole chicken? My, Farmer Bec's, favorite way to enjoy our chicken is using a technique called dry brining, which means applying salt to the meat then letting it rest, while optimizing airflow throughout the process to get crispier skin. This method is my easy, flavorful method. You can find more detailed information on our Recipe page!

What do the chickens eat?Chickens like to eat all kinds of grains, plants, and bugs. They cannot survive on a grass-fed diet, like ruminant animals, because of the way they digest. The chickens have access to insects and forage since they live on pasture, but also require a well balanced poultry feed to get an adequate amount of protein, fat, carbs, and vitamins. Here's a quick rundown of why our poultry feed is so awesome! A lot of Local: Our feed is milled by a farmer in Hillsborough, NJ who sources their grain from other local farms, usually within 5 miles. Not only do I get to support other local businesses, our carbon footprint is also smaller! Good ingredients: Hello, whole roasted soybeans (instead of soybean meal and canola oil)! The soybeans have a natural, nuttier fattiness to them that carries through to the chicken... allegedly! Also, only non-GMO grains are used. Freshly milled: Feed quickly begins to degrade after it has been ground. The sooner the chickens eat it, the more nutritious is it. We pick up small enough batches, where we are refreshing our feed reserve weekly. They're getting the freshest stuff!

What does "pasture raised" mean?Pasture raised means the chickens are moved to fresh grass everyday. You can see how they're moved in the post below. Pasture raised is better for the chickens, better for the environment, and better for you! The chickens have access to soil, plants, and bugs, so they get to act like chickens. Daily moves mean they leave yesterday's poop behind. Spreading their manure over multiple spots fertilizes the field. Our chicken's meat is denser and juicier because of their environment and they get more exercise.

What is a chicken tractor?A chicken tractor is a moveable enclosure that the chickens live in. It has no floor, so the chickens have full access to the grass and dirt. The chicken tractor protects them from the elements and predators, but we still surround the tractors with electric netting for added protection, foxes will dig under the sides of the tractor.
